Rocky Mountain E-Review of Language and Literature

Index of Issues | Guidelines for Submission | Thematic Issues | Review Queue

The Rocky Mountain E-Review of Language and Literature and its sister (print) publication, the Rocky Mountain Review of Language and Literature, are the official refereed journals of the Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association. Both journals publish scholarly articles chosen for their relevance to those involved in the study and teaching of language, literature, and culture.

The print version appears semi-annually (normally April and November) and is mailed to all current members of the RMMLA. Articles published in the print version of the journal must be written in English.

The electronic version is asynchronous, with articles appearing as soon as they pass through the final editing process, regardless of the print schedule. The Rocky Mountain E-Review contains all of the articles and reviews that appear in the print version, plus:

  • articles written in languages other than English; and
  • articles that incorporate multimedia components (graphics, audio and video clips, etc.).
All articles and reviews appearing in the online version of this journal pass through exactly the same referee process as those which appear in print, and we are happy to provide a letter stating this fact to our authors for hiring, tenure, and promotion purposes. The complete referee process is described below, under "Guidelines for Submission." Please consider submitting your work for publication consideration.

One of the benefits of RMMLA membership is that only current RMMLA members have access to the two most recent issues of the Rocky Mountain E-Review: usually the one currently under development and the next most recent issue. Past issues are, however, accessible by members and guests alike.

The Rocky Mountain Review of Language and Literature is indexed in the MLA International Bibliography, Humanities Index, Ulrich's Periodicals Directory, the MHRA Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature, IBZ (the International Bibliography of Periodical Literature), NISC (The National Information Services Corporation), Women Studies Abstracts, LLBA (Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts), Sociological Abstracts, Social Services Abstracts, Worldwide Political Science Abstracts, Linguistics & Language Behavior Abstracts, IBR (the International Bibliography of Book Reviews), Book Review Digest, Book Review Index, and Media Review Digest.

Guidelines for Submission

Submission: Manuscripts for consideration should be submitted in triplicate to the Editors at the RMMLA Secretariat. The writer's name should appear only on the cover letter, not on any of the copies. Please allow three to four months for a decision on publication. RMMLA membership is a prerequisite for both submission to and publication in the Rocky Mountain Review and the Rocky Mountain E-Review.

Format: Manuscripts should be 15-25 pages in length, double-spaced, and should conform to the latest MLA-style guidelines. Submission of a manuscript indicates that the article is not being considered nor has been published elsewhere. The print version of the journal publishes articles in English; the electronic version publishes articles in any language.

Abstract: Three copies of an informative and comprehensive abstract of 50 to 100 words must accompany the manuscript when it is first submitted.

Documentation: Writers are responsible for checking the accuracy of all references and for ensuring that complete information is provided in the Works Cited list for all sources referenced in the text.

Figures and Images: It is the responsibility of the writer to seek and to obtain written permission from the copyright holder to reproduce all visual or other materials accompanying the manuscript.

Review Process: Upon receipt, each manuscript undergoes an in-house editorial review at Washington State University. The first evaluation focuses strictly on the suitability of the topic for the Rocky Mountain Review, the appropriateness of the style for an academic audience, and the presence of reference to other scholarly works. Authors are informed within four weeks whether their manuscript has been rejected or will be sent to external, anonymous readers chosen by the editorial board for their expertise in fields suitable to the subject. These reviewers consider the author's grasp of the theoretical framework and relevant previous scholarship, the originality and strength of the main thesis, and the effectiveness of the supporting evidence. Reviewers are asked to complete their review of manuscripts within eight weeks, at which time they decide if the article is publishable as is, acceptable with certain specific revisions, recommended for more substantial revision and resubmission, or unacceptable.

Acceptance and Publication: Once an article is accepted for publication, the author submits the following to the Editors at the RMMLA Secretariat:

  • a clean, fully revised, print copy of the article;
  • a 3.5" floppy disk or a 100 MB or 250 MB zip disk with the text;
  • a biographical note of about 50 words.
The article is then copyedited and prepared for publication. The print journal is published semi-annually in October and April. The deadlines for submitting articles to be published in the fall or spring issue are August 1st and January 15th respectively. The on-line journal publishes articles at point of final edit. Abstracts of on-line articles written in a language other than English appear in the next print edition of the journal for bibliographical purposes. Authors receive five offprints of their articles or abstracts following publication in the print version.

Book, Media, Software, and Website Reviews: Reviews of books, media, software, or scholarly websites, or questions regarding such reviews, should be sent to the Administrative Assistant at the RMMLA Secretariat. Reviews must also be submitted both in print and on a 3.5" floppy disk or a 100 MB or 250 MB zip disk.
