Special Topic Sessions
How to Propose a Special Topic Session
Special Topic Sessions (STS), unlike Permanent Sessions, must be approved each year.
We appreciate your following these STS guidelines and procedures:
- Proposals for STS must be received at the RMMLA Secretariat by November 1 (postmark
date; email OK) to be listed in the print and online Call for Papers.
- NEW: Persons requesting either type of STS (see below) must be current in their RMMLA dues for the convention
year when making the request.
- Presenters in regular and STS sessions must be current in dues by April 1 of the convention year.
- NEW: All alternate chairs must be current in dues by April 1 of the convention year
to be listed in the program and to retain claim to chair the session the following year.
- STS chairs may read a paper in their own session, although this is not encouraged. No one, however, may
read more than one paper at the convention.
- No session may have more than two presenters from the same institution, unless the focus of the session is the institution
itself and/or if it is organized by the local host institution, and at the discretion of the
Executive Director.
- STS involving undergraduate students have a separate review and are limited to one per year.
- If an STS is held three consecutive years, organizers may address a written request for permanent status
to the Executive Board, signed by twenty RMMLA members.
There are two ways to propose an STS for the RMMLA convention.
- RMMLA members may send an STS title and explanatory subtitle to RMMLA by
November 1 (postmark date; email OK).
The RMMLA Executive Board selects the STS to include in the print and online Call for Papers
on a topic-appropriate / space available basis. Any STS that are approved after November 1 are
posted only to the online CFP, so members are encouraged to check the WWW version from time to time.
- RMMLA members may recruit presenters and send the STS title and explanatory subtitle PLUS the names, paper
titles and short abstracts of the presenters, to RMMLA by March 1 (postmark date; email OK).

Presenters in ALL sessions, regular and special topic, must be current in RMMLA dues
by April 1.
