Recreating the Middle Ages: Romantic Productions of the Roman de la Violette
This paper examines three Romantic musical theatre versions of Gerbert de Montreuil’s thirteenth-century romance, the Roman de la Violette. (Weber’s Euryanthe, and two Parisian popular productions: an equestrian pantomine and the comic opera La Violette.) Concentrating on the depiction of the heroine and her secret, I examine how this one tale was adapted to three very different musical stage productions.
