Adelaide O'Keeffe's gruesome Oriental novel of early Christian history, Zenobia, Queen of Palmyra (1814), uses gothic conventions to resolve tensions between the late enlightenment 'rational dame' and its replacement, the Victorian sentimentalized mother.
