The American West and College Composition

To teach a writing course that has as its theme the American West is to place special emphasis on culture and mythology - even dreams. Because writing and reading are processes of self-discovery, it is important to examine personal experiences, the unconscious, childhood memories, and many other sources of introspection. Perhaps the most important of all is to examine our culture and those that helped to create it. By comparing our own experiences to myths, we are able to mold our identities; the universal stories enable us to connect ourselves to the larger patterns of history, to our own cultures, to our own cultures, and to each other. This presentation will discuss the ways in which studies of the American West nourish Comp.
