Report on the 2001 RMMLA Convention
The 2001 RMMLA convention was held at the spectacular
Sheraton Wall Centre in downtown Vancouver, British Columbia,
from October 11- 13, 2001. Linda
Hutcheon,
Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the
University of Toronto was our keynote speaker and also hosted a session entitled "Making Literature
Sing: Operatic Fictions". Among the other highlights of the convention:
- William Germano of Routledge spoke at the Publishing Forum on "Getting Published: A Guide
for the Perplexed."
- Donna Heiland from the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) was there to present information on their respective
grants and fellowships.
- Marvin Lansverk of the Montana State University gave a talk entitled
"'Smile, Your Course Evaluations Are On The Web': Privacy, Policy, Pedagogy" at
the Open Forum session.
- Maureen Smith of Organizational Development and Training at the
University of Idaho gave a presentation on Professional Image Management.
- Brad Roghaar of Weber State University read a selection of his poems.
- Sally Bishop-Shigley, also of Weber State University gave a presentation on former Poet Laureate and native of Nova Scotia,
Elizabeth Bishop.
- Carolyn Kelly, the Graduate Student Delegate to the RMMLA Board organized the Graduate Student
Forum around the topic of Mentoring. We will also hold a Job Forum where members can bring copies of their
CV and/or employment cover letters for editing and feedback from faculty volunteers.
- Albrecht Classen, RMMLA Vice President moderated a panel discussion on the
Future of Literary Studies.
- We had a full program of exciting regular and special topic sessions,
as well as other professional activities and events of interest to our membership.
We were glad to see so many members in Vancouver!
