The 60th annual RMMLA convention was held at the DoubleTree-Reid Park Hotel in Tucson, Arizona from October 12-14, 2006. Our local host institution was the University of Arizona and our local arrangements chair was Albrecht Classen, Professor of German and former RMMLA President.

Our keynote speaker at this year’s convention was Richard Shelton, Regents Professor in the English Department at the University of Arizona. His poetry and prose have appeared in more than 200 magazines and journals, including The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and Paris Review. His first book, The Tattooed Desert, won the International Poetry Forum’s United States Award, and The Bus to Veracruz was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. Shelton’s most recent book, Going Back to Bisbee, won the Western States Book Award for Creative Nonfiction. He is the recipient of two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and a prestigious Completion Grant from the Lannan Foundation. In 1972 Richard Shelton established the Writer’s Workshop at the Arizona State Prison, out of which have come eight books of poetry and prose. He continues to direct workshops at the Arizona State Prison Complex in Tucson, Arizona and various Arizona Correctional Facilities.

In addition to giving the keynote address in Tucson, Richard Shelton also lead a panel discussing "Poetry and Politics."

We had an exciting program and want to thank all who attended for making a a great weekend in Tucson.
