Tragic Marriage among Us: Two Recent Conference Addresses by Gordon B. Hinckley.

Two of LDS Church President Gordon B. Hinckley’s addresses at the October 2004 General Conference, “A Tragic Evil among Us” (Saturday evening, deploring and warning against the destructive effects of pornography on marriage) and “The Women in Our Lives” (Sunday Morning, praising women), seem to invite cross-referencing, and evoke a sort of midrashic reading of these texts of Mormon “living scripture,” with particular attention to their revelations of tragic (and perhaps also comic) possibilities in contemporary Mormon marriage. This paper is part of an intermittent ongoing project, “Imagining Mormon Marriage,” in which two previous papers have explored Mormon fiction dealing with marriage.
