Women’s Anger in Hanne-Vibeke Holst’s Recent Novels
This paper will try to analyze representation of women in the two recent works by the Danish writer Hanne-Vibeke Holst, When I Got Angry: Stories from the Women’s World and My Aunt’s Migraine. Both novels, one clearly autobiographical, the other based on the author’s travel and interview with women all over the world, have one theme in common—women’s anger. Following several very personal stories of women who represent different generations and different cultures, my paper will try to show the commonalities of these women’s life experiences and of their resistance to the patriarchal laws they are subjected to. Whether through open action or through less obvious but nonetheless effective ways of passive resistance, in such different countries as Denmark and Vietnam, Russia and Egypt, guided by their anger, these women have contributed to changing our world.
