Thinking Critically about Critical Thinking Across the Disciplines.
On our campus, composition courses are linked to general education clusters, and the writing focuses on cluster themes in natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. While the amount of collaboration between teachers varies, our graduate teaching assistants have been particularly eager to embrace the ideals of this program. However, they are also intimidated by their lack of knoweldge of other disicplines. One positive consequence of this integrated approach has been the increase in graduate teaching assistants' understanding of critifcal thiking and its role in academic literacy. In this presentation, I will describe some of the assignments graduate students have designed and their struggles -some more effective than others- to discover thinking strategies that transfer across disiplinary lines. In addition to those involved in teacher training, this topic should be of interest to teachers who hope their writing classes will prepare students for the kinds of thinking expected in other courses.
