Photo Courtesy of Rocky Mountain National Park Reduced or non-existent travel budgets have become more and more common in English and Foreign Language departments throughout the US. The RMMLA Executive Board has, therefore, decided to establish two new Research Travel Grants, one for faculty (including university and college professors, independent scholars and emeriti faculty) and one for graduate students in the dissertation phase (ABD). Each award carries with it a $250 stipend to support travel necessary to the applicant’s research project. Selection is based on the merit of the project and the need for travel to complete the project. Guidelines are outlined below.

Recent Faculty Research Travel Grant Recipients:

  • 2005 - Tatyana Novikov (University of Nebraska, Omaha)
  • 2004 - Donelle Ruwe (Northern Arizona University)
  • 2003 - Michael T. Carroll (New Mexico Highlands University)
Recent Graduate Student Research Travel Grant Recipients:
  • 2005 - Melissa Root (University of Denver)
  • 2004 - Lamont Antieau (University of Georgia)
  • 2003 - Catherine J. Lewis Theobald (University of Colorado, Boulder)
The same application procedure holds for faculty and graduate student grants. Selection is based first on the completeness of the application, followed by a ranking based on five criteria: originality of research; scholarly context (reference to current research on topic); mechanics and style; coherent thesis statement; and contribution to scholarship in the field of study. To apply, one must:
  1. Be a current member of RMMLA.
  2. Submit BY EMAIL ATTACHMENT (no longer print application) to rmmla@wsu.edu an application packet (written in English only) which includes the following: :

    1. A one-page description of the project.
    2. A one-page work plan, including a justification for the travel.
    3. A one-page budget and itemization of anticipated travel costs to the research site, including mention of other real or potential funding sources.
    4. A current CV (maximum 2 pages)
The postmark deadline for submission of application materials to the Secretariat is February 1.. Awardees will be notified by March 1. Travel must be completed by the end of the following academic year.
